Israel's Day of Mourning and Us

Five misfortunes befell our fathers ... on the ninth of Av. ...On the ninth of Av it was decreed that our fathers should not enter the [Promised] Land, the Temple was destroyed the first and second time, Bethar was captured and the city [Jerusalem] was ploughed up. -Mishnah Ta'anit 4:6

...Should I weep in the fifth month [Av], separating myself, as I have done these so many years? -Zechariah 7:3
In the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month ...came Nebuzaradan ... and he burnt the house of the L-RD... -II Kings 25:8-9
In the fifth month, on the tenth day of the month... came Nebuzaradan ... and he burnt the house of the L-RD... - Jeremiah 52:12-13
How then are these dates to be reconciled? On the seventh the heathens entered the Temple and ate therein and desecrated it throughout the seventh and eighth and towards dusk of the ninth they set fire to it and it continued to burn the whole of that day. ... How will the Rabbis then [explain the choice of the 9th as the date]? The beginning of any misfortune [when the fire was set] is of greater moment. -Talmud Ta'anit 29a
Tisha B'Av, the Fast of the Ninth of Av, is a day of mourning to commemorate the many tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people, many of which coincidentally have occurred on the ninth of Av.

Tisha B'Av means "the ninth (day) of Av." It usually occurs during August.

Tisha B'Av primarily commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples, both of which were destroyed on the ninth of Av (the first by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E.; the second by the Romans in 70 C.E.).

Although this holiday is primarily meant to commemorate the destruction of the Temple, it is appropriate to consider on this day the many other tragedies of the Jewish people, many of which occurred on this day, most notably the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.

I am a regular reader of the Drudge Report and yesterday there was a link to an article about how there was a credible threat of a terrorist attack (biological and/or chemical) from Iran on America and it's allies as a result of being cut off from the Swift Financial Network.  Swift is the financial system through which Iran makes its money from oil.  Today I read about Iran cutting off oil sales to the UK and France in retribution for this.  In addition to all this, they are close to having a nuclear bomb, have consistently threatened to wipe Israel off the map and are trying to usher in their version of Muslim Messiah known as the 12th Imam (or Madi) who bears a striking resemblance to the description of the anti-Christ in the Book of Revelation.

With the global financial melt-down still going on, a weak American President who is hostile to the nation of Israel and the Middle-East being taken over by radical Muslims; it certainly seems like things are coming to a head prophetically.

There are still yet three Jewish feasts to be fulfilled prophetically: The Feast of Trumpets (September) which many, including me, believe to be fulfilled in the rapture of the church out of this world, Yom Kippur (Atonement) which would be fulfilled by the Second Coming of Jesus Christ to this earth, and the Feast of Tabernacles which would be fulfilled when Jesus sets up his Thousand Year Reign of Peace upon the Earth.

Then there is Tisha B'Av which falls in late July of this year (just before all the fall feasts).  Could this be the year that Bible prophecy goes into high gear and we are witness to the beginning of sorrows?  I am quite convinced that the world (and America) have been under God's judgement for quite some time.  The numerous natural disasters which increased in frequency and intensity (earthquakes, tsunami's, volcanoes, floods, destructive storms) and financial chaos around the globe are all events by God to get our attention so that we may repent and turn our hearts back to him. From the day that our current president was elected I believed that God started the countdown and would use President Obama to judge our nation much the same way He did Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to judge the nation of Israel.

I have a close Jewish friend who had a very supernatural encounter with God early in her youth and who now serves Him with her musical talents, books, and dramas to reach nonbelieving Jews and Gentiles with the good news of salvation. She advised me to stock up on canned food and water in July; enough to last a month for she believes these necessities will be in short supply come this Tisha B'Av.

I too believe judgment is coming and that America will suffer as it never has before.  First we need to turn our hearts back to God and repent of compromise if we are believers and to serve Him with our whole hearts knowing time is short.  Second, we need to be wise stewards and to stock up on the basic necessities in the event of a catastrophe.

The Lord is patient and long-suffering but as history (and the Bible) tell us; He will not abide evil forever and this world has become very, very evil. What once was called good is now called evil and visa versa.  Let us all search our hearts and ask daily what He would want us to do with the time left to us for the days are indeed dark.

Luke 21:28: New American Standard Bible (NASB):

But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because (A)your redemption is drawing near.”
